Most festival packing lists are written by people who have never been to a festival. This one is written by people who have forgotten things at festivals and suffered for it. Fashion meets function — here's what you actually need.
Anything irreplaceable (jewellery with sentimental value, expensive cameras). Anything that requires two hands to carry. Anything you'd be devastated to lose. Anything that needs ironing. Glass bottles (banned at most festivals). More than you can carry comfortably for 2km.
Based on years of festival experience, these are the things people most commonly wish they'd packed: a portable phone charger (the single most important item after your ticket), blister plasters (you will get blisters), a small torch or headlamp for camping, and a dry bag for your phone if there's any chance of rain.
Camping festivals: Add a sleeping bag rated below the expected night temperature, a sleeping mat, tent pegs (extras), and a mallet. Don't rely on the tent's included pegs.
Desert festivals (Coachella, EDC): Add electrolyte packets, a cooling towel, and a light jacket for the cold nights. The temperature drop after sunset in the desert is significant.
Burning Man: Add goggles (essential for dust storms), a fur coat or heavy layer for cold nights, and a dust mask. The playa is a unique environment that demands specific preparation.
